‘Eddie The Eagle’ Has Landed At Fox; Set For 2016

Written by Tiffany on March 14 2015

Fox has jumped on Eddie The Eagle, acquiring the biopic about Britain’s lovably inept first Olympic ski jumper that reunites the studio with Kingsman: The Secret Service writer-director-producer Matthew Vaughn, who is producing this one, and topliner Taron Egerton, who is starring alongside Hugh Jackman in the pic which just began production in the Alps.

Smart move on the reunion: this deal comes only weeks after the February 13 release of Kingman, which opened opposite Fifty Shades Of Grey to more than $41 million domestic for the four-day Valentine’s Day frame and has grossed $259.1 million globally.

In Eddie The Eagle, Egerton will play Michael Edwards, who rose to fame as the very-last-place finisher in two events at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, but left as a scene-stealing poster boy for never-say-die underdogs everywhere. Jackman will play his coach. Fox has set an April 29, 2016, release for the film directed by Dexter Fletcher from a script by Sean Macaulay. Vaughn, Adam Bohling, David Reid, Rupert Maconick and Valerie Van Galder are producing. It has that late-April weekend to itself for now.
